Matcha Bowl with Grass Glaze and Three Types of Clay

A matcha bowl featuring an interplay of ochre, reminiscent of the earth, and deep greenish-brown tones.

The surface reveals the clay's particles, subtle irregularities, and variations in glaze density, creating a rustic, powerful character as if it has captured a natural landscape within itself.

The gently flared rim retains a natural, organic wobble unique to handcrafted pieces.

The interior also displays complex shifts in color, allowing you to enjoy the bowl's unique expression both while whisking matcha and after finishing your drink.

This bowl allows you to experience the rustic beauty of Japanese clay and the serendipity of nature.

Anna's Craftsmanship

This bowl is made using three different types of clay: white Shigaraki clay, red Izumo clay, and raw clay harvested in Nara Prefecture.

The differences in color, grain, and texture of each clay create a complex character on the surface of the vessel.

For the glaze, Anna uses a "grass glaze" (kusa-yu) that she formulated herself.

Based in a calm yellowish-brown, the glaze features occasional deep green and brown shading. Variations created by the thickness of the glaze and the firing process produce colors reminiscent of wild grasses and earth.

In addition, the area near the base of the bowl is left unglazed, preserving the color and texture of the clay itself.

The foot shows traces of being carved, and along with the small indentations and particles on the surface, you can feel the marks of both the material and the human hand.

Rather than seeking uniform perfection, this piece cherishes the natural changes brought about by clay, glaze, and the firing process.
