Matcha Bowl with Black Glaze from Three Types of Clay

A matcha bowl characterized by its deep black glaze and the powerful texture of the clay.

It features a plump, rounded body and a gently undulating rim. The dark brown glaze has natural variations in shade, with reddish-brown and deep black hues emerging when it catches the light.

A beautiful luster is created where the glaze has pooled thickly, and the fine irregularities give the vessel a rich character.

The interior is also finished with black glaze, allowing you to enjoy the contrast with the vibrant green of the matcha.

Anna's Craftsmanship

This piece is created by combining three different types of clay: white Shigaraki clay, red Izumo clay, and raw clay from Nara Prefecture.

The particles and textures of each clay emerge on the surface of the vessel, allowing you to feel the rawness of the earth itself even through the smooth glaze.

The charm of this bowl lies in the complex expression of the black glaze.

What appears to be a solid black surface is actually dotted with reddish-brown color variations, trails of flowing glaze, and small indentations. There are also areas on the rim where the glaze has pooled, creating a natural sheen.

The clay texture remains visible around the foot, creating an impressive contrast between the soft ochre color and the black glaze.

In the center of the foot, there are black spots formed during the firing process, with reddish kiln-fired tones spreading around them.

With its unrefined shape, visible clay particles, and flowing glaze, this work captures the accidental beauty created by materials and fire.
