Matcha Bowl in White Matte with Three Types of Clay

A beautiful matcha bowl featuring a soft white glaze with glimpses of the underlying clay peeking through here and there.

Rather than a solid white, the overlapping colors of pale beige and reddish earth create a rustic and warm expression.

With its plump, rounded form and gently undulating rim, the natural, unrefined lines convey the gentle touch of handcraftsmanship.

The subdued tones of this bowl allow the vibrant green of the matcha to stand out. It is recommended not only for daily tea rituals but also as an object to simply admire in your home.

Anna’s Commitment

This bowl is made using three different types of soil: white Shigaraki clay, red Izumo clay, and raw clay harvested in Nara Prefecture.

By combining clays from different regions, the piece achieves a complex and natural aesthetic that could not be created from a single material.

A white matte glaze is used on the surface, allowing the colors of the clay and the subtle variations from the firing process to emerge through the soft white.

Particularly striking are the exposed clay textures on the sides and the traces of white glaze that appear to flow over them. The contrast between the glazed areas and the exposed base gives the work a sense of depth.

Furthermore, natural variations are left along the rim, and subtle color shifts and small irregularities from the glaze can be seen on the interior.

Rather than uniform perfection, this is a signature Anna matcha bowl that values the character of the clay and the marks of the maker.

About Handcrafted Pottery

Because each piece is made by hand, there are individual differences in shape, size, glaze color, density, and surface texture.

This bowl, in particular, is defined by the distinct expressions of the three clays and the natural flow of the white matte glaze.

Please enjoy the ripples of the rim, the colors peeking out from beneath the glaze, and the small indentations as unique qualities of handcrafted work.
