Black-Glazed Matcha Bowl Made from Three Types of Clay

A matcha bowl that leaves a lasting impression with its deep black color and the powerful texture of the clay.

The dark brown glaze envelops the entire vessel, shifting in appearance from black to charred brown depending on how the light hits it.

It is characterized by its low, rounded shape and gently undulating rim. The natural variations unique to handiwork create a calm and settled presence.

The interior is also finished with a black glaze, beautifully accentuating the vibrant green of the matcha.

Anna's Dedication

This bowl is crafted using three different types of clay: white Shigaraki clay, red Izumo clay, and raw clay harvested in Nara Prefecture.

By combining the unique properties of each clay, fine particles and textures are created on the surface, allowing one to feel the inherent strength of the materials.

The black glaze is not uniform, showing variations in sheen and color density across the surface. Tiny dimples and traces of glaze flow remain, revealing a rich expressiveness when touched by light.

Particularly striking is the foot (kodai) at the base of the vessel.

The unglazed portion of the clay features black spots born from the firing process, creating a beautiful contrast with the reddish-toned clay.

Smooth glaze and rugged earthen texture—distinct qualities harmonized within a single vessel.

A bowl with a significant presence, cherishing natural materials and the serendipitous transformations caused by firing.
