Black Glazed Matcha Bowl of Three Clays

A matcha bowl featuring a beautiful contrast between deep black and the warm colors of earth.

The bold black glaze flows from the top of the vessel, while the lower portion retains the reddish hue of the clay.

The natural variation at the boundary between the black glaze and the earth tone creates an appearance reminiscent of a landscape captured from the land itself.

With its rounded body and slightly undulating rim, the uneven shape—a hallmark of craftsmanship—gives this piece a unique sense of presence.

The interior is finished in a glossy black glaze, beautifully highlighting the vibrant green of the matcha.

Anna’s Dedication

This bowl is crafted using three different types of clay: white Shigaraki clay, red Izumo clay, and raw clay harvested in Nara Prefecture.

By combining clays from different regions, the particles and textures of each material overlap to produce a rich and expressive finish.

The piece is finished with a black glaze.

Deep within the black, the play of light reveals subtle lusters and fine textures, offering a nuanced and profound appearance that is far from monotonous.

The lower part of the bowl is left unglazed, intentionally preserving the raw color and texture of the clay.

The contrast between the smooth, glossy black glaze and the rough, earthy texture of the clay is the defining characteristic of this bowl.

The foot displays traces of hand-carving, and the visible clay particles and natural irregularities convey the raw strength of the material.

This bowl celebrates an unrefined form and the natural expression created by the marriage of earth and glaze.

About Handcrafted Pottery

Because each piece is handmade, there are individual differences in shape, size, glaze color, shading, and surface texture.

This bowl is particularly characterized by the flow of the black glaze, the boundary with the earthen surface, and the natural ripples of the rim.

Please enjoy the fine textures of the glaze, the clay particles, and the carving marks on the foot as unique characteristics of handmade work.
