Amber Glaze Matcha Bowl Made from Three Types of Clay

A matcha bowl characterized by its deep amber glaze and the powerful expression unique to handcrafted ceramics.

Shades of reddish-brown and near-black are layered within the lustrous dark brown, revealing different expressions depending on the light.

The plump, rounded form and the slightly irregular rim—a natural, unforced shape—give this vessel a unique presence.

It is not only perfect for enjoying matcha, but also a piece you can admire as a work of ceramic art when it is not in use.

Anna's Commitment

This bowl is crafted using three different types of clay: white Shigaraki clay, red Izumo clay, and raw clay harvested in Nara Prefecture.

By bringing out the distinct colors and textures of each type of clay, they are unified into a single vessel.

The surface is finished with an amber glaze known for its warm, brownish tone. The variations in color depth, luster, and subtle surface texture created by the thickness of the glaze and the firing process give the bowl a profound character.

Furthermore, the rim retains a natural, handcrafted irregularity, and the interior of the bowl also features textures that reveal the movement of the clay.

As clays from different regions come together, the accidental changes that occur in the kiln become part of the piece. It is a bowl where you can enjoy the individuality of the materials themselves.

About Handcrafted Ceramics

As each piece is made by hand, there are individual differences in shape, size, glaze color, shading, and surface texture.

This matcha bowl, in particular, possesses a complex character created not only by the use of three different types of clay but also by the flow of the amber glaze and the results of the firing process.

Please enjoy the variations in the glaze, the small dimples, and the irregularity of the rim as unique expressions of handcrafted work.
